We’re three weeks in, and as I write this, we’re six hours away from our first full run-through. The set is almost completed, except for some painting, and a hydraulic platform that sounds amazing. Not to be overly cheery via the Internet, but I’m very pleased with how things are going so far.
My role in the show is a Dreamer— a figment of the imagination of Mary, the show’s protagonist. So I think that the biggest challenge— so for me at least, is to, well, act like a ghost, a shadow of a young girl’s fear and sense of loss. And look good doing it. There’s a part of the first act, where all the Dreamers, standing on the highest part of the stage, are singing about a storm that is clearly tormenting Mary while she sleeps. Rob’s direction for us for this scene was to “act like there’s a storm”. You’d think that that wouldn’t be too difficult, and you’d be wrong, mostly because we have to almost mime it, because we’re not allowed to voice our fear— because we’re singing— and we can’t use facial expressions very much, because we’re so high up. So hopefully our acting won’t be too hilarious tonight.

All winter, we had was chorus practice and coaching (we’ll call it that) in the ways of nature, courtesy of Josh Harvey.
So I suppose I should not have been surprised when warm-up was not what I had become accustomed to in high school. The stage was completely empty, not even taped for the sets, and we all stood in a circle, mimicking being stretched by an imaginary string which pulled us up towards the ceiling, before it snapped, and we, having I think unconsciously come to believe in the string, bent almost violently at the waist, our arms following only a moment later and our fingers resting on the ground between our feet. In addition to this, we’ve also been doing several other exercises to make us more aware of our bodies and of the people around us, which I think is a key theme of the musical—a gradual awakening to one’s more primal, physical self, symbolized by the growing of the garden, a rooting in soil. More to come—I have a date with an angry math assignment.
